  • DVR, NVR, OVR…What does it all mean?

DVR, NVR, OVR…What does it all mean?  I just want to see my cameras! Camera Systems are coming in all shapes and sizes these days. The most popular camera systems are 8 cameras and under with the end goal to quickly see live video from ANY Device and EASILY find and locate recorded video clips to share with police. The 3 typical configurations of camera systems are as follows: DVR (Digital Video Recorder):  Analog cameras with a simple to use interface for viewing live and recorded video.  Typically used for local, onsite recording and viewing.  Although analog camera signals have vastly improved in recent years with HD cameras, low quality analog camera systems are still very prevalent.  Quality for recording and playback of video is typically grainy, pixelated and hard to view.  Analog DVR’s require a direct cable from the camera to the recording device. NVR (Network Video Recorder) was established for network environments with networked cameras.   Whereas Analog camera system require wire from the camera to the recording device, a Network Recording system works similar to that of a typical network system.  The Cameras (devices) are connected to the network switches and are routed with IP addresses instead of a direct cable to the recorder.  This allows for a much more structured installation with camera locations expanded  buildings and multiple locations to easily bring all the camera viewing back to a single location.  It also allows for smaller systems to by connected together and quickly accessing cameras from around the world. OVR (Online Video Recorder)  This is a new platform that was established to bypass the local recording device.  This allows network cameras to be installed wherever an internet connection is available and be completely autonomous from a recording device.  All you need is power, internet connection and a recording account to get started.  This allows for less expensive, smaller systems that are very portable. CLOUD BACKUP As in everything, Cloud Backup is integrated to camera systems.  Why not?  Some of your most important footage from security cameras have always been stored on a local drive onsite.  If there was an issue with the recording device or it was intentionally damaged or stolen, so was ALL your footage!!  This can be a risky maneuver for some installations or applications.  The cloud allows for seamless constant backup of your recorded footage for remote access of live and recorded video.  It solves that issues of dead equipment that causes you to loose old footage.  It also prevents damage or theft of your equipment that would cause loss of footage. • Professional Locksmiths – What does “Professional” mean?

From the foundation of our organization in the early 1980’s, our founder, Bob Katz, had a precise focus on being a “Professional Locksmith”.  In fact, it was plastered on the side of the early service van that Loc-Doc traveled in back in those days.   Bob felt that is was an important differentiator for a new company to establish itself with a standard of excellence and professionalism that would help improve the reputation of a industry that had less than a professional reputation. Because of our foundation, we want to keep building upon that understanding.  Unless we constantly work on and improve our professional reputation, it will slowly fade away. To our customers, we want to communicate our goals in words and actions.  It is important for our customers to know that we are deliberate about our goals and serious about accomplishing them.  If we constantly pursue our goal to be the “Professional Locksmith”, then we are always working hard on our checklist and 3 key factors. Professional Communication With Each Other With our Vendors With our Customers Professional Appearance Clean & Orderly Workspace Clean & Orderly Uniforms Clean & Orderly Jobsite Professional Conduct Honest Courteous & Kind Serving Each Other Serving Our Customers How can it impact our daily operation? As a Customer Service organization, we must always be in the attitude of serving our customers.  We want to prepare ourselves to do this by serving each other.  We want our team members to always, in every way look for ways to help each other succeed.   When the focus is shifted to serving others, it will definitely show when we serve our customers.  On a daily basis, we deal with stressful, time sensitive matters.  Each customers issue is of highest priority to them!  We want you to feel and understand that it is the highest priority for us as well. Why should it matter? We are security professionals.  We train, educate and improve our knowledge on the latest in technology and hardware to protect your investments, family and assets.  All the knowledge that we obtain, and all the credentials in the world don’t mean anything to our customers if we can’t communicate our knowledge, experience and expertise in a Professional manner. If we present our knowledge as arrogant or pretentious “experts” that “know more than you”, then we will never gain your trust or confience. We strive to set a standard for excellence.  We grow, learn and improve daily.  We don’t take that for granted.  It’s not guaranteed or expected. To be a Professional isn’t something that is awarded or entitled.  It takes daily focus and intentional discipline to maintain.  That’s our goal.

  • Video Surveillance Gives You the Low-Down on Home Happenings While You’re Working

Have you ever wondered exactly what goes on at your home while you are busy at work? Do packages sometimes go missing off of your front porch? When you return home, are there times when you are certain that things look as though they’ve been tampered with? If you would like to know exactly what happens while you are busy working all day, consider installing a video surveillance system. Video surveillance can provide you with greater peace of mind. When you come home and think that something is out of place, all you have to do is review your video surveillance images. Perhaps you will find that there was a wind storm that blew in and out while you were working. On the other hand, the neighbor’s child or pet might have wandered over and investigated things. The most troubling scenario, of course, would be if an unidentified person was poking around and running off with things such as packages or other unsecured items. If this ends up being the case, at least you would now know that you need to increase your security measures and perhaps invest in a better security system. If the thought of video surveillance sounds appealing to you, contact us at Loc-Doc, Inc. We have 35 years of combined experience in the home security industry and are confident we can help you protect your home. Our technicians would be happy to answer any questions you might have and make suggestions regarding other things you can do to make your home more secure. #VideoSurveillance

  • Feel Like You’re Living too Close to Nature? Door Installation Can Fix That

Imagine sitting at your desk, ready to unwind and enjoy some quiet time after a long day at work. You get up to grab your novel that is sitting in your briefcase by the front door. As you approach the door, you realize that the major rainstorm howling around the eaves of your home is threatening to enter.  Worse yet, as you feel a breeze and water on your face, you realize that the storm is actually invading your home. When you feel like you are at one with nature, while inside your home, it may be time to consider door installation services. Most of the time, when wind and water are entering your home around the door area, it is due to problems with the door, door frame, or weather stripping. If it is a simple matter of replacing old weather stripping, the fix is easy. If there are cracks between the door frame and the door, you could try adding weather stripping to seal the gap. However, if the door has been damaged, possibly kicked in at some point in time, it will create a wider gap and may not latch properly. When the gap is wide enough, no amount of weather stripping will fix it and you may truly need a new door installation. #DoorInstallation

  • How to change your code or combination (Simplex)

[vc_row content_aligment=”center”][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]How can I change my code?  A very common questions we are asked in person and over the phone.  Here is a short summary of changing your simplex combination locks. Simplex locks are probably one of the most popular or common combination locks for commercial applications.  Unofficially, the KABA Simplex lock was originally installed by Noah on the Ark.  So, chances that you’ve encountered one is very likely.  Changing the code is very simple if you have the tools and a quick cheat sheet (provided below). We are provided the unofficial Loc-Doc cheat sheet and the official Simplex cheat sheet. Here is a quick summary: ALWAYS test the lock and current code before starting. 1.  CODE:  Enter the existing code. 2.  CLICK:  After removing the combination change plug (inside of the lock), insert the spanner wrench or change tool and rotate clockwise until you feel/hear a “click” 3.  CLEAR: Turn the knob clockwise or operate the lever one time (this “clears” the combination gears). 4.  CODE:  Enter the NEW code. 5.  CLEAR:  Turn the knob clockwise or operate the lever one time (you should see the latch on the edge of the door retract into the door.  If it DOESN’T, repeat steps 4 & 5 until it does.  Never CLEAR the knob or lever 2 times in a row.  This will result in an OPEN code.) • Security Perspective:  A reactive or preventative approach

Each day, each individual makes intentional or unintentional decisions regarding security relating to your personal safety or the protection of your property and personal assets. During a recent visit with a customer, we began discussing these decisions and how impactful the results can be.  As the conversation ended and I thought through the conversation later, the impact really set in.  When you leave your home in the morning, you won’t think about leaving the door unlocked and just hope that someone wouldn’t come in when you were gone and help themselves to your property or your family.  You make a conscious decision to secure your home when you leave.  You park your car and go into your office.  You click the remote button twice just to make sure the doors are locked.  You wouldn’t leave the doors unlocked and the keys in the cup holder for anyone to “borrow” your car while you are inside working. At the end of the day, you wouldn’t leave the office building unlocked so anyone can come inside, steal your equipment, gather your customer information or harm fellow employees.  You make intentional security decisions each day. During the conversation, a reference was made about the fact they rely on professionals for HVAC, mechanics, plumbing, electrical and other aspects of facilities.  But often times, Security is taken as a DIY project.  The result typically ends in “temporary fixes” or “band-aids” to the security of our facilities and homes.  His point, we need to make more intentional and proactive decisions to protect our facilities, our patrons, our families and each other.  When we look at Security upgrades or security maintenance issues that have just been ignored for a number of reasons, we have to understand that the impact can be on a grand scale.  Saving a few dollars now can and will result in a larger fiscal or physical damage. Loc-Doc, Inc in Charlotte, NC approaches these situations with a professional approach,  we want to solve problems, improve security and impact our communities with better security.  We want to improve safety and security for our families, our friends and our communities.

  • Keypad or Card Reader: Which Access Control System is Right for My Business?

With modern advances in technology, your commercial property can be more secure than ever. Access control systems put the accessibility of your business right into your hands. Control who enters and exits your building with just a swipe on your iPad, monitor times your office is available to employees, and know where your workforce personnel is at all times. The two main access control options for businesses are the keypad and card reader systems. Both offer specific advantages, and the best way to determine which option is right for you is to contact us at Loc-Doc, Inc. today. Keypad The keypad access control system controls your entrance doors using a 1-6 digit PIN number system. Each employee is given a pin number that specifically identifies them in your entrance records. Each door lock can be a stand-alone option, or they can be interconnected to connect to your monitoring system. If you choose to connect them, you will be able to monitor exactly who and when they use their code in your building. This option usually works best when employees have access to only a few entrance doors. Card Reader The card reader access control system uses a card and a card reader to determine if a person is allowed access to your building. Like the keypad system, the readers can be linked together to a central monitoring system, or they are available in stand-alone options.   Each card is designed with a unique identifier, much like the PIN system, and most systems can handle up to 3,000 unique cards. Employees need only to scan their card to gain entrance. This system is often considered more convenient, but if a card is lost or stolen, it may present security concerns until the card can be deactivated. #accesscontrol

  • 5 Warning Signs It May Be Time To Invest In Residential Security

Homeowners often find comfort in the idea that “it will never happen to my home.” Unfortunately, it can and does happen to unsuspecting homeowners.   If this makes you unsure about how effective your current residential security methods are, it may be time to invest in a better system. Here are some common warning signs that your home may be more at risk than others for crime. You Travel Often or Have Long Times of Absence- If you and your family travel often or if you have times of long absences from your house, it may be at risk of break-ins.       Criminals usually don’t just break into homes spontaneously. Most times, the offender will have watched your home for some time.       They learn your routines and notice if you are gone often or for regular intervals. If you travel often for business or pleasure, it may be time to improve your residential security system. You Have Valuables On Display- Many times, homeowners believe the inside of their homes are secure to prying eyes.       However, lit rooms are easy to see into at night. Thieves can quickly identify expensive furnishings, jewelry boxes, and electronics within your home, and they will likely suspect other valuables are there, too. Also, don’t leave new purchase boxes out with your trash—that’s just advertising for someone to come steal your new computer or big screen TV. High Crime Rate in Your Neighborhood- This one may seem obvious, but it can change at any time. If your neighbors experience a break-in, it can definitely scare you into improving your residential security. It is important that you know if there is crime in your area. Thieves who get away with a burglary in one neighborhood may feel confident that they can successfully do it again to someone else nearby. Low-Lit Neighborhood- Many residential neighborhoods are well-lit, with streetlights and well-lit homes diovan hct generic.       On the other hand, many residential neighborhoods are not well-lit. If you live in one that is not well-lit, you may need to take extra measures to ensure your home’s security. Older Neighborhood- Do you live in a neighborhood with many elderly couples? Sadly, this may leave the neighborhood more vulnerable to burglaries. Often, burglars believe elderly families will have medications or valuable items in their home with fewer security measures. They may try to take advantage of this. If you are ready to step your residential security up a notch, contact us today at Loc-Doc, Inc. #residentialsecurity

Make sure employees can easily recognize if someone seems out of place, and help them feel comfortable speaking up. The second step is having communication options in the event of an emergency. This may be a speaker system or handheld communication devices for your management team. Use an Access Control System- This is one of the most effective office security tools. Access control systems do just their name implies: they control who has access to your building. Keypad and card reader systems only allow people in who you have given access to. They have effective locking mechanisms, and you will be able to know exactly who has entered your building and when. ID Employees- It is best that employees in large companies wear identification cards or badges. This tells other employees that each person is supposed to be there. Have an Emergency Plan- Having a plan in case of emergencies will help to ensure your office security after other measures may have failed. • DO NOT DUPLICATE KEYS! – Is that a thing?

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] If you want to control the duplication of keys, we should look at a product such as Medeco to solve the problem. You can get your existing keys stamped with “DO NOT DUPLICATE” but it doesn’t stop anyone from getting copies without your knowledge. Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Lowe’s all have self serve kiosk that allow anyone in possession of any non-restricted key (meaning open market key blanks) to walk up, put the key in the machine and duplicate them without any validation. There are also a number of smart phone apps, including KeyMe which allow anyone in possession of any non-restricted key to take 2 pictures (Front and Back) of the key and request a copy to be mailed to them without the key even leaving the property.  This is a great resource and an incredible tool to use, but it also opens up the possibility for unauthorized duplication. Medeco offers products that are Restricted, meaning they are only licensed to specific dealers.  Loc-Doc, Inc is a dealer of Medeco products.  If we generate a Medeco key, the only way to get additional copies is by requesting it through us.  No other locksmith company has access to our records, our keys or our systems.  When we get key request, they are checked and validated through the proper authorization contact on the account before any additional copies are made.  We highly value and protect our restricted key system.
