  • What Is The Best Keyless Door Lock?

Today we are going to answer the question: What is the best keyless door lock? We’ll also discuss the benefits of a Keyless Door Lock and What features to consider in a Keyless Door Lock. At Loc-Doc Security, Our Mission is to help you protect your people and your property. These days, with the advancement of technology, many people have transitioned from traditional locks with keys to a keyless door lock. So what exactly are the benefits of a keyless door lock for your home or business? We will break down some of the advantages and cover some features you should look for when selecting a keyless door lock. First, what is a Keyless Door Lock? A keyless door lock is just like a traditional key lock. Both secure the door, however, the main difference is the method to unlock and lock the door. A traditional lock uses a key. A keyless door lock could use a combination code on a keypad or a smartphone app to unlock the door. So, How Does A Keyless Door Lock Work? Instead of a key, you would enter a numerical code to enter a facility or property. The code is entered on a numerical keypad and when entered correctly, the lock releases electronically. Most keyless door locks require batteries in order to unlock and some might require a small electrical current. There are many benefits to choosing a keyless door lock over traditional locks for your Home or your Business. Let’s start with the Benefits of Keyless Door Locks for your Home. Convenience: With a keyless door lock for your home, the standout advantage is convenience. Convenient Unlocking & Locking: Imagine you’re in a hurry to get inside. You can eliminate fumbling through your purse, pockets, or belongings to produce a set of keys. There’s no need for them. Simply enter your code and enter. Another scenario we encounter regularly is coming home with bags and bags of groceries and not being able to find the keys. This is where the convenience of a Smart Keyless Door Lock is incredible. Some Smart Keyless Door Locks on the market today use your location to automatically unlock and lock your door. This cool and very helpful feature is made possible by Bluetooth, GPS, and Geofencing from your smartphone. I can vouch for this being convenient and efficient. We have had a Smart Keyless Door Lock on our home for the past 10 years and it makes grocery shopping easier. Eliminating a physical key is also helpful when going for a run or walk. There’s no need to carry a physical key in a pocket to re enter your home. On some Smart Keyless Door Locks, you can even use your apple watch to open your door! This is a feature my husband has used frequently over the years. These days, everyone has a phone; even your kids! You’re more likely to keep your phone handy at all times. The great thing is Your phone acts as the “key” to open the door. Having this convenient perk makes entering your home quick and simple! Convenient Access for Multiple People: Once you eliminate the necessity of a key for your lock, you can grant access to your home by a code or mobile authorization. Children, Grandparents, Guests, and even Service Providers like house keepers or maintenance can be assigned their own code or a temporary code. No more leaving a key under a mat or in a fake rock, no worrying about lost or stolen keys, no stress over keeping track of your spare keys! Another great use for a Keyless Door Lock is on AirBNB Rentals or short term rentals. If you are renting your vacation home, it’s very easy to add a code and assign it to a vacation renter for the term of the rental rather than meeting the renter and having them keep track of a physical key. We’ve enjoyed staying in AirBNB’s with Keyless Door Locks and never have to worry about misplacing a key or losing it at the beach! Easily grant access to different people for a set period of time determined by you! Convenient Integration with Smart Home Devices: Now that everyone has an Amazon Alexa device in their homes, some people have asked Can Alexa Control Door Locks? The short answer is yes, with some contingencies. There are some smart keyless door locks that will integrate with home automation devices and services like Amazon Alexa, Nest, Google Assistant, and many more. For example, when your doors unlock you can have certain smart lights turn on when you enter your house. There are some smart keyless door locks that can be paired with a video doorbell service to see who is at the door before it is unlocked. Easy Installation: Most people are scared of a DIY project because often the finished results are underwhelming. This is not the case for installing a Keyless Door Lock. Since there are no major adjustments required to the door or the door frame, it’s actually very simple to install. I’ve done it myself and it took a screwdriver and about 20 minutes of time! We have a step by step guide to walk you through the entire installation process of the Yale Touchscreen Lock. Things to consider when selecting a Keyless Door Lock for your Home: One of the most important questions we are asked is what happens when your Keyless Lock Battery Dies? And What To Do If Your Keyless Lock Battery Dies? Keyless Door Locks are powered by batteries and are very reliable. Because of the small amount of battery power, they can last anywhere from 3-5 years. They also are equipped with a warning sound or light that will alert you many months in advance when the batteries become low. You will have advance warning and some locks will show signs of a low battery like a slower response time, slower opening, and even multiple attempts to open the lock. Replacing the Batteries in Your Keyless Door Lock is simple and requires only a screwdriver. The battery compartment is usually on the inside cover of the lock and once removed with a screwdriver you can quickly change out the batteries. If you ignore all of the warning signs of a low battery for months and the Keyless Door Lock won’t power up there is a solution to get inside! On the underside of the lock keypad, you can find 2 nodules. Applying a 9 volt battery to the nodules will give you enough power to get inside and change the batteries! Now lets visit the Benefits of Keyless Door Locks for your Business: While similar in functionality, a Keyless Door Lock for a Commercial Property is in a different elevated league then one for your home. While they can come with a touchscreen to activate the keypad, most businesses lean towards a static keypad when there is a high amount of users. Some Commercial Keyless Door Locks can have up to 250 users! Convenience: A Commercial Keyless Door Lock still ranks high on convenience! While this is an easy lock to use, you might need a professional locksmith to install this Commercial Grade Keyless Lock. There is a bit of drilling to install most Commercial Grade locks since it wont’ fit in the existing hole. The Convenience of a Commercial Keyless Door Lock is paramount for Businesses of All sizes. This type of lock makes it easy to keep things in a storage room or IT room secure. It can also be great in conference rooms and private restroom facilities. Convenient Programming: Most Commercial Keyless Door Locks are easy to program. This is a huge advantage when it comes to adding and deleting users. Here are some Features to Look for in a Commercial Keyless Door Lock. Programming Features Passage Mode Feature is the ability to leave the door unlocked for an extended period of time by entering a code. This works well for front doors that would be set to open during normal business hours and that lock automatically after hours. Passage mode allows the flow of traffic for the hours you set. Auto Relock is a feature that allows you to set how long the lock waits until it automatically relocks itself. This can be as short as 3 seconds to as long as 3 minutes or not at all. Door Position Switch is a sensor that sets an alarm when the door is propped open and keeps people from propping the door to bypass using the code. Things to consider when selecting a Commercial Keyless Door Lock: Key Override: On Commercial Keyless Door Locks there is a key override that can tie into a Master Key System for your building and be compliant for Fire Safety in a Knox Box . A Knox Box is a small, wall-mounted safe that holds building keys for fire departments, emergency medical services, and sometimes police to retrieve in emergency situations. Local fire departments can hold master keys to all boxes in their response area, so that they can quickly enter a building without having to force entry or find individual keys held in deposit at the station. What Are Your Needs? So what is the best keyless door lock? Well, that depends entirely on your individual needs. It’s similar to people asking what is the best car? You would receive a different answer if you were a mom of 3 versus a college student. The same applies to your needs whether you’re looking for a Keyless Door Lock for your Home or a Business. If you have questions about Keyless Door Locks or want to know what would work best for your needs, we are here to help! • Why Is My Door Not Latching? Why Is My Door Not Closing? What is a Continuous Hinge? What Are Signs

Today we are going to answer the question: Why Is My Door Not Latching? Or Why is my door not closing? We’ll also talk about solutions that can help your door latch. At Loc-Doc Security, Our Mission is to help you protect your people and your property. Many customers of ours contact us throughout the year when their door is not latching or closing. First let’s dive into what latching means? Latching is when the mechanism inside the door (the latch) positively engages inside the door frame. Why would someone’s door not latch? Here are 2 reasons why your door isn’t latching. Your Door Has Swelled: Temperature Changes can affect your doors. Yesterday, your door was shutting like usual. But why is it not closing today? This happens frequently in the South with the heat and humidity that is prevalent almost year round. This is especially pronounced in wood doors that are not sealed or varnished around the exterior. Moisture from the humidity can be absorbed around the edges causing the door to swell. This is usually not found in metal doors as often. Metal doors can be affected by extremely high heat, but are very durable with weather changes. Wear and Tear: Doors with pivots or hinges can deteriorate and start to sag. The reason for the sagging is loose or bent hinges. This happens when the door is opened and closed thousands of times a week. Frequent use will cause the screws to loosen or even warp the hinges. This can cause the door to not align properly and prevent it from latching shut. What is a Commercial Door Hinge? What is a Continuous Hinge? What is a Piano Hinge? The following is an excerpt from an Assa Abloy blog about Commercial Door Hinges and they do a great job of explaining their usefulness and application. According to one of our partners, Assa Abloy, Commercial door hinges are thicker gauge, load-bearing hardware that lasts for years. Ranging in size and configuration, a typical size for a commercial butt hinge is 4 ½” by 4 ½” with a ⅛” thickness and 1⁄2” diameter. The corners are typically square. They are larger than average hinges because they must handle more wear and tear over a longer period of time and perform under weight, stress and surrounding environment. This heavy duty hardware comes in a variety of finishes, but stainless steel is considered a superior material. Ball-bearing hinges are one of the most common types found in commercial use. These hinges prevent some of the heavy door problems that occur with long-term use in offices, hospitals, and industrial buildings. These lubricated bearings allow for smooth and silent operation with long-lasting and reliable operation for heavy, wide doors or exterior doors. A typical door hinge has two leaves that are joined by a single pin, which can be removed. The pin is the pivotal point, allowing the leaves to rotate around the pin as the door closes and opens. While this is a typical design, they can be made to handle various loads for various applications, which often involves additional thickness, more screw holes, more springs and different hinge configurations. What is a Piano Hinge? What is a Continuous Hinge? Also called a continuous hinge, a piano hinge runs the full length of the door. They are available in different thicknesses, widths, finishes, and customized designs depending on the length of the door and application. They are best used for industrial applications where the door may face frequent and intense use. The original purpose of this hinge was for attaching piano lids so they were able to fold down. Piano hinges are also used for shed and barn doors, as well as fire doors, marine doors, prison cell doors, and heavy-duty gates. The type of piano hinge changes based on the door weight and width as well if it’s a wall, post-frame, revolving door, or other type of heavy-duty door. Why Use a Continuous Hinge? Continuous hinges are great for high traffic areas. Often found on entrance doors for hospitals, businesses or commercial buildings. They are the same height of the door which distributes the weight evenly on the frame and reduces stress on the hinge. Because of this length and sturdiness, they are able to support heavier doors and can last longer than standard hinges. What Are Signs That Your Door Isn’t Latching. Contact With The Frame: If you notice missing paint or varnish on your door this is a big sign that you have an issue with your door latching. Look at the top of the door to see if there are rub marks. Uneven Gaps: Looking at the door from the outside, if you notice gaps on the hinge side that are uneven (more gap at the top than at the bottom) this is a sign that your door has shifted and could be affecting latching. Unusual Swelling: While not noticeable in the winter, pay attention when spring starts. If your door suddenly stops working, it could be from an extremely hot or humid day. If you have questions about continuous hinges or why your door isn’t latching, we can help! Schedule a free evaluation with our team at locdoc.net/sales and pick a time that works for you!

  • Why Is There Light Coming Through My Door?

Today we are going to answer the question: Why is there light coming through my door? We’ll also talk about different types of weatherstripping and some pros and cons of different types. At Loc-Doc Security, Our Mission is to help you protect your people and your property. A customer of ours recently noticed light coming through their doors to their facility. They also noticed an influx of bugs, water leaking when it was raining, and drafts of cold air. After an inspection by a local health inspector, they recommended installing weatherstripping to keep pests, water, and air from entering. Having loose gaps around your door will put your facility at risk. Ensuring you have a tight seal around the door opening will alleviate you of unwanted light, air leaks, water, and even pests from entering your building. Another benefit to adding weatherstripping is saving money! Did you know that having a tight seal around your door opening can make a major difference on your utility bills? Air that leaks through doors wastes a lot of energy and raises your utility costs unnecessarily. By doing a visual inspection, you can quickly see where your money is drifting out the door! The EPA estimates that most commercial buildings wastes 30% of their energy. Imagine the savings you could achieve for your facility by reducing energy waste! Not sure where to start? Let’s dive into Weatherstripping! What is Weatherstripping? Simply put, Weatherstrips are flexible materials that are installed on the door or around the opening. The purpose of weatherstripping, according to Wikipedia, is “to keep out weather, increase interior comfort, lower utility bills,[4] and reduce noise. “ Here’s a Quick Review of Door Problems and Solutions with Weatherstripping Light Coming Through A Closed Door Seeing light and gaps around your door is a sign you might need to add weatherstripping or possibly replace old weatherstripping. Large gaps can allow heat or air conditioning to leak from your building and cause a dramatic increase in your energy bill. Water Leaks Have you noticed water seeping through your entrance? Or is their water pooling? This is a sign that weatherstripping needs to be replaced since it’s not doing it’s job. Having consistent exposure to moisture can lead to mold, or water related damage to your door. Damaged Weatherstripping Do you have weatherstripping already but noticed that it’s cracked, torn, or compressed? This aging can cause problems and property damage with increased drafts and leaks. Types of Weatherstripping There are many types of weatherstripping to choose from. The right type should provide the right amount of consistent compressions around your opening and a tight seal. This will protect your building from changes in the weather and increase the efficiency of your building saving your facility thousands of dollars. Vinyl Pros: Very tight seal that keeps out drafts and weather. Great for keeping out water. Cons: Since it’s a flat strip, it’s Not effective on uneven surfaces. Nylon Brush Pros: Great for double doors. Eliminates air gaps and drafts. Works well with uneven surfaces. Cons: Water resistant, not waterproof. If water pooling and leaks are already a problem, it will not solve completely. Door Edge Strip Pros: Good for double door storefronts. Different lengths available. Great at covering gaps. Cons: Only applicable on storefront doors. If you notice gaps, water leaks, drafts of air, or light coming through your facility doors we can help! Save your facility money by ensuring your energy isn’t leaking out of the door! Schedule a free evaluation with our team at locdoc.net/sales and pick a time that works for you!

  • How Does My Door Lock Work? How To Tell When Your Office Door Is Locked?

Today we are going to answer the question ‘How Does My Door Lock Work?’ and ‘How To Tell When Your Office Door Is Locked?’ and ‘How To Understand Different Lock Functions.’ At Loc Doc, Our Mission is to help you protect your people and your property. We recently had a customer that experienced this problem and today we are going to share how we walked through helping them solve the problem. A customer of ours was getting locked out of their office even when they tested the lever handle before they left. They asked us why it kept happening? After examining the door we noticed that they had a push button on the back of their lock. This button was being inadvertently activated every time it hit the doorstop on the wall. The type of lock they had on their office door is called an Entry Function Lock or Office Lock. Entry Lockset Function: This is a very common type of lock that is prevalent on offices. On the backside of this lock will be a small button on the lever that allows you to manually lock the door from the inside or use a key to open it from the outside. When you push the button in or push and turn the button, it can result in the lock remaining locked even after a key is used to open the door. So how can you tell when your office door is locked? One way to check if the lock is engaged is to look at the latch on the side of the door. When the lever is pushed down to open the door, you can see if the latch retracts. If it does, the lock is in an unlocked state. If it doesn’t retract, the lock is in a locked state. So how can you avoid this frustration of getting accidentally locked out from your suite, your office, or even a storage room? Knowing what type of lock is the first step. We just explained what an Entry Lockset function is and now we will explain a few additional functions for different locksets. Storeroom Lockset: This type of lock is mostly found on supply closets. There is no locking button on the inside and the door stays in an always locked function. The storeroom lock is opened by a key and is always in a locked state. You can exit anytime, but you can’t reenter without a key to unlock the door. The storeroom lock keeps the door locked at all times which is useful in a storage area or supply room. Classroom Lockset: A Classroom function lock has no locking button on the inside and uses a key to unlock or lock the outside lever. One of the benefits is being able to keep the lock in an unlocked or locked state with the key. Anyone inside is still able to exit the room but the outside can remain locked. The back of classroom function locksets are designed to prevent tampering with the lock from people since there is no push button on the inside. They are commonly found in office suite entrances, corridors and even as the name states, Classrooms in schools. Privacy Lockset: This type of lockset is usually found on bathrooms, changing rooms, or mother’s rooms. This type of lock ensures that people inside the room can have privacy and prevents people from walking in while in a venerable state. The lock can be activated from inside the room. Often times, there is a visual indicator stating if the room is occupied or vacant. Passage Lockset: This type of lockset is used on closets, passage ways, and halls where a key is not necessary but you would like the door to remain closed. There is no locking mechanism and the lock just ensures that the door is latched. To help our customer that was struggling with not knowing if their office door was locked, we recommended using a Classroom lockset so the button was no longer accidentally pushed and activated. We also showed them how to know when your door is still locked even when you open it with a key. By checking if the latch retracts when the lever is pressed, you can know that the door is unlocked. We hope this has helped to understand the different functions of a lockset and how to know when your office door is locked. • What To Know Before A Fire Door Inspection

Today we are going to answer the question ‘What To Know Before A Fire Door Inspection?’ At Loc-Doc Security, our Mission is to help you protect your people and your property. We recently had a customer that was flagged for several failed openings on a fire door inspection. The last thing a facility manager wants to hear is that they aren’t compliant with regulations and didn’t pass the fire door inspection. While this can be a frustrating problem, we were able to review the Fire Marshall’s Notes from the inspection and look for key indicators and specific violations. We can learn from this experience by sharing how we helped solve our customers problem and what you need to know before a Fire Door Inspection. Problem: A customer was flagged for several failed openings on a fire door inspection. Solution: Assess each opening and determine the necessary repairs or replacement. What is a Fire Door Inspection? The goal of a fire door inspection is to ensure the fire doors in the building are functioning properly, have no damage, and are able to be used as intended during a fire. This fire door inspection normally happens annually for many commercial office buildings, warehouses, schools, hospitals and health care facilities. Should a fire break out, the safety of the occupants as well as emergency responders all depend on the inspection of the fire doors. If your fire doors aren’t code compliant they can cause a safety hazard. 5 Tips To Prepare For A Fire Door Inspection 1. Is the fire label clearly visible and legible on both the door and the frame? Additionally, is the assembly the correct rating for the wall it’s installed in? 2. Is the door closer in good condition? Even though it may be currently working, be on the lookout for leaking oil or degraded hardware, it can be a sign of a near failure. 3. Is the lock in good condition? The door must positively latch at all times. Make sure there are no obstructions in the frame that would prevent the door from fully closing and latching and that the latch on the lock fully engages with the strike. 4. Are there large gaps between the door and the frame? Tight tolerances are required to pass inspection. 5. Is the door in good condition? For wood doors, make sure that the veneer isn’t excessively cracked or separated from the rails. Metal doors must also be inspected to make sure there aren’t large amounts of rust present or if the internal welds are failing. Are there large holes or added hardware to the door that would prevent egress or positive latching? Keeping a close eye on your fire rated openings and taking a preventative approach can save you time and headache with your local inspectors. We were able to help our customer repair and ensure their fire doors were functioning properly and pass the fire door inspection! We can help you protect your people and property with repairs or replacement of fire door so you can pass fire door inspections. Book a free evaluation with our team below!

  • Can I See My Property Without Being There?

Today we are going to answer the question ‘Can I See My Property Without Being There?’ At Loc-Doc Security, our Mission is to help you protect your people and your property. We recently had a customer that experienced people dumping trash in their parking lot along with a string of car break ins. This can be a stressful and costly situation for business owners and property managers. Having to pay for trash clean up can add up if it becomes a popular un monitored dumping ground. We can learn from this experience by sharing how we helped solve our customers problem and how to protect your business from trash dumping and being vandalized! Problem: A Large Retail Center had people dumping trash after hours and a rise of Car Break Ins. Solution: A Cloud Based Camera System that can be seen and monitored from anywhere! Question 1: What Areas Do You Want To Focus On Most? One of the first things to do is decide what areas to focus on. Is this prevention? Is your focus on a specific area? A PTZ Camera can Pan Tilt and Zoom and is a great option to be able to zoom in on license plates or on a trespasser. Question 2: What Length of Retention Are You Looking For? The next step would be to decide how long you want to store your camera footage in the cloud. The range is from 3 days to 180 days. We recommend and most businesses choose 14 days of storage. It’s easy to use whether on your mobile phone with an app, a tablet, laptop, or desktop computer. Question 3: How Do You Know If Something Happens? One of the great things is that you can choose! It’s easy to set Motion Alerts for certain times of the day. There is also Line Crossing that detects when areas are breached and can notify you in real-time. One feature that is really beneficial is object or people counting. This is especially helpful in retail locations. You can easily identify how many people visited a location, your peak business hours, and how often consumers passed a display. You can also reduce vandalism, trash dumping, and break-ins by sending alerts when an individual or vehicle stays in one place too long with Loitering analytic. Question 4: How Can I See My Property from Anywhere? We recommend one of the best products in the industry for viewing your property remotely from a mobile device on an easy to use app, tablet, or computer. You also have the ability to view multiple locations from one screen. The best part is that it is all stored in the cloud! There is no DVR or designated computer that holds all the footage. Because footage lives in the cloud, you can easily view your property in real time from home, at the pool, on vacation, or even while traveling internationally. All of these benefits were the winning solution that made the decision easy for our customer to protect their people and their property. We can help you protect your people and property with a cloud based camera system. Book a free evaluation with our team below!
